My Friend, the Dark

My Friend, the Dark  is a silent graphic novel that acts as a metaphor for anorexia, something that I battled with when I was younger. The story is about a girl who befriends the Dark, a personified body of shadow that appears through the mirror in her room, gifting her with tiny numbered sheep. This is a play on the idea of  ‘counting sheep to fall asleep’, an initial comfort that she begins to obsessively control as they slowly begin to appear as calories in her food to be counted. The reflection of the girl follows the Dark into the mirror as she begins a deeply introspective journey to recovery.

Bread Box Comics

Bread Box Comics is a thematic, comic collective from Edinburgh College of Art, posting a new comic every Wednesday based on our monthly theme. Our aim is to celebrate a range of styles, breaking away from any preconceived ideas about what a comic should look like. Here is an example of one of my own contributions.

A Little Egg in a Big World

A Little Egg in a Big World is a comic series about the sweet and ponderous Egg, who never hatched. Egg will face all manners of social and political scenarios, as she interprets the facts of life in this witty, cynical and thought provoking narrative, to find out what it's really all about.

In the first comic, Egg will learn about faith and religion, in all different manners of speaking. She will first meet the Onyons, little yellow folk who believe, unequivocally, that their god is inside a cardboard box. As the story unfolds, Egg will learn about organised religion and the varying extremities, morals and beliefs within different religions. She will learn about spirituality and faith aside from the religious perspective, absorbing and observing in a quest to discover herself.
